Additionally, kids can actually play video games and use tablets or computers on a train.
Some luxurious long distance trains offer great amenities such as private cabins. Such compartments feature multiple beds where an entire family can sleep. A private bathroom, small kitchen and storage areas are also available in such long distance trains.
Last but not least, traveling directly by train can be much more affordable than taking a long distance flight that may even require transfers.

Railroad travel is often thought as a romantic vestige of a bygone age. However, while railroad travel has a distinguished past, it is once again gaining popularity as a mode of travel. The first documented railroad transport systems date from the 1820s. This early system appeared in England as a replacement for the traditional wagons used in mining operations. The discovery that a solid wheel on a stiff rail required significantly less energy to power than wagons led to the development of early rail systems in the late 1700s. This advancement coincided with the development of the stream engine. Both technologies were successfully combined to produce the first steam powered locomotive open to the public in 1825. Early railroad mainly focused on trafficking goods however demand for passenger traffic quickly grew. From the 1840s, railroad underwent rapid expansion culminating in the historic completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869 in the United States. As the demand for passenger travel grew so did the amenities offered during travel. Luxury cars with posh amenities became a staple for the railroad. As a result, tourism by rail flourished and communities quickly sprang up to support the industry. Railroads suffered significant decline in the 20th century due to the popularity of the automobile however demand for passenger travel is on the rise.

This was considered a modern engineering marvel. In the past the only mode of transportation was by stagecoach or horseback. This was dangerous at times and only a limited amount of materials could be moved at one time. The train was a breath of fresh air to the world of travel. Imagine, a way for people to travel in a cost effective way from continent to continent.
It was always a problem moving timber and livestock to different states. With the railroad it provided easier access. The towns flourished as new housing developments made the way for new families. The railroad became an essential and effective way for public transportation. The United States was a leader in the industry, encouraging other continents to get on board with railway technology.

Although horse-drawn wagon ways had been in use since the 1550s, modern rail transport was born with the invention of the steam engine. In 1804 the first steam engine tram took two hours to travel nine miles with 70 iron workers and 10 tons of iron in Wales. It was not until 1825 that the first steam operated passenger train in England went from Stockton to Darlington, charging passengers one shilling for the trip. America’s first passenger railroad was built in 1829.
Others soon followed, and the railroad became the transport of choice for long-distance travel. Railroads sprung up on every continent, providing faster and safer travel to many parts of Europe and the British Empire. The completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869 made relatively fast travel possible across the United States.
Sleeping cars came into use in the 1830s, allowing passengers to continue traveling as they slept, although Pullman’s 1857 sleeping car was the first to be considered comfortable. Prior to the advent of dining cars passengers relied on roadhouses near the railroads’ water stops for their meals. Dining cars were common on all passenger trains by the 1880s, and finally travelers could journey non-stop to their destinations with all the necessary services.

If you are planning a trip, you can save a considerable amount of money if you travel by train. With the increases in fares and fees charged by the airlines, train travel is an attractive option for travelers who are not in a hurry to get to their destination. An added benefit is that by traveling by train, you get to see the country while you ride in comfort.
Unlike airfare, train ticket prices tend to be stable. Fares may increase for holiday travel, but trains travel prices generally remain constant. If you travel by train, you may be able to buy a regularly priced ticket for less than half of the price you would pay for a plane ticket.Didn’t catch that?
This explains it. If you buy a sale priced ticket, discounts are even larger. Sales are plentiful but trains fill up quickly so it is wise to plan train trips in advance.
In addition to the lower prices, you may be eligible for discounts on your train ticket. Train operators typically give discounts to AAA members, members of the military, children, students and seniors. Many people do not realize that they do not have to pay baggage fees when they travel by train.
